Originally founded as Breathitt Town in 1839, the name was changed by the Kentucky General Assembly to Jackson in 1845. Jackson became an incorporated town in 1854. Governed by an elected town council and administered by the Chairman of the Council, the community did not transition to a city until 1913. The following individuals have served as Mayor after the incorporation of the City of Jackson:
