Images from STA Challenge Hike 6

Team Yahoo – June 17, 2023

By Stephen D. Bowling

Team Yahoo experienced warm but nice weather as they made their way from the North Terminus to Morehead with an overnight at the Clark Farm. Ten miles to the camp helped hikers arrive early in the afternoon. Many decided to take Steve Barbour’s offer to skip ahead and hike about 4 miles back to camp made Sunday’s trek much shorter. An evening with cornhole, laughs, and trail magic at the Clark Farm was enjoyed but all. Sunday was a challenge with lots of elevation change and about 1,500 “small bunny hops” in the last section before heading downhill to Morehead. Ahh, but that is what makes this a “challenge.”

With Father’s Day on Sunday, I chose to hike the entire section in one day and made it into the Morehead Convention Center parking lot at about 6:10 in the evening (after a quick stop at Dairy Queen on Main Street). It was a great hike but tough and long to do in one day with high temperatures and no water sources. It was fun to meet many of the Team Sheltowee Hikers moving in the opposite direction as they hiked north to the Northern Terminus.

Here are a few images from that hike:

Next month, we head south to complete a section along the Cumberland River in the area around the Mouth of Laurel and Cumberland Falls. We will continue the “flip-flop” hike for the year to break up the distance and to make our time in the woods more enjoyable.

ATTENTION: The next section is tough, so be prepared. See you all in July.
